Towards a FABulous CAP - How can the EU support the uptake of agro-ecological practices by farmers?
11 juni 2021
Online conference on 11 June 2021 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m (CET)
Agriculture provides ecosystems for a broad range of species, many of which are reliant on the quality of agricultural landscapes. Similarly, agriculture depends on important ecosystem services provided by species in the agro-ecosystem, such as pollination, natural pest control, erosion control, nutrient cycling, soil quality and water regulation.
The FABulous Farmers project aims to support at developing more knowledge, experience and visibility of Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB): those elements of biodiversity that provide ecosystem services, which support sustainable agricultural production, while also delivering benefits to the environment and society as a whole.
Within the context of the Interreg NWE- project, farmers in four EU Member States (FR, NL, BE and LUX) and the UK have experimented with ten FAB measures aimed at promoting ecosystem services. Projects carried out in the five participating countries have provided tangible benefits to farmers, the environmental and society. At the same time, important barriers for an effective FAB uptake by farmers remain.
Based on the project findings, key policy recommendations have been stipulated for the implementation of FAB measures at the EU policy level, including through the new Common Agricultural Policy’s (CAP) green architecture. These recommendations are bundled in a policy paper that will be presented and discussed during this event.
Agenda of the conference:
Presentation of examples of FAB-measures tested in 5 European countries
European Policy Paper on how to support FAB in the new CAP
Panel discussion with reflections from EU policymakers, practitioners and researchers
This conference is a partner event of EU Green Week 2021.
